This is one of the largest plastic recycling plants1
in the United States. It is in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Jay Chilton is head2 of the plant.
JAY CHILTON: "On an average3
week, we receive4 anywhere from5 one to
1.5 million pounds6
(454,000 to 680,000 kg) of bottles7
in to the plant."
JAY CHILTON: "We receive eight
to ten trucks8 a
day coming into the plant, and a truckload9's
roughly10 40,000
pounds." That is more than 18,000 kilograms of plastic every day. JAY
CHILTON: "These bales11
on average are about12
900 pounds (400 kg).
They can range13
anywhere from 600 pounds (270 kg) to 1500 pounds (680 kg) in this
configuration. This is accumulation of roughly 10 to15 weeks of deliveries14." Nearly15 three football fields16 of
plastic sit17 just a short ride18
from the processing center.
JAY CHILTON: "This is where the whole19 bottles enter
the whole bottle wash20
-- it's just like21
your front-end22 load23 washing machine24 at
your house. It's just a lot longer, and a
lot bigger25."
Then, the plastic is broken into26 what the recycling industry27 calls "flakes28." "It's kind of like29 your flour30 sifter31 at home when you're sifting32 out the big chunks33 of flour."
