From VOA Learning English, this is the Health Report1 in Special English. A new study
says people are living longer2,
but many are living longer in poor health. Researchers3
found that4 life expectancy5 has increased6 by about7 five years since8 1990. On average9, men worldwide10 can expect11 to live
67 years. Women can expect to live to age12
73.
The findings13
appear14 in a
series of articles15
in the Lancet. Richard Horton is the medical journal's top editor. He says the
Global Burden16
of Disease17 2010
study presents18 good news overall19.
The research found that far
fewer people20 died
of measles21, tetanus, respiratory problems and diarrheal
diseases in 2010 than in 1990.
Deaths22 from infections, childbirth-related23
problems and malnutrition fell24
about 17 percent to 13.2 million. Global efforts25
have focused on reducing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
AIDS deaths have dropped26.
But every year each of these diseases still
kills more than27 a million people. Mike Cohen is the head28 of global
health research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He says infectious diseases are
now better controlled29.
He says people live longer. But that means30
conditions not caused by infection, like high
blood pressure31 and diabetes, are more common. The study
found that non-communicable32
diseases caused more than half33
of the global burden of disease in 2010.
The two biggest killers34 are heart disease35 and stroke36. They caused
one-fourth of all deaths in 2010. The top causes of disability37 were physical conditions like
arthritis, back38
problems, and mental and behavioral39
problems such as40
depression, anxiety41 and substance abuse. For VOA Learning English, I'm Laurel
