I’m Rich Kleinfeldt with some expressions using the word1 heart2.

People believed for a long time that the heart was the center of a person’s emotions.  That is why3 the word "heart" is used in so many4 expressions about emotional situations.

One such expression5 is to “lose6 your heart” to someone.  When that happens7, you have fallen in love8.  But if the person who won9 your heart does not love you, then you are sure10 to have a “broken heart11.”  In your pain12 and sadness13, you may decide14 that the person you loved is “hard-hearted15,” and in fact16, has a “heart of stone17.”

You may decide to “pour out18 your heart” to a friend.  Telling someone about your personal problems can often19 make you feel better20.

If your friend does not seem21 to understand how painful22 your broken heart is, you may ask23 her to “have a heart.”  You are asking your friend to show24 some sympathy for your situation. Your friend “has her heart in the right place25” if she says she is sorry26, and shows great concern27 for how you feel.

Your friend may, however28, warn29 you not to “wear30 your heart on your sleeve31.”  In other words32, do not let33 everyone see how lovesick34 you are.  When your heart is on your sleeve you are showing your deepest emotions35.

If your friend says “my heart bleeds36 for you,” she means the opposite37.  She is a cold-hearted person38 who does not really care about39 your situation.
In the ever-popular motion picture, “The Wizard40 of Oz,” the Tin Man41 seeks42 a heart. He wanted to feel the emotion of love, and was seeking help from the powerful43 Wizard of Oz to find a heart.

The Cowardly44 Lion, in the same movie45, did have a heart.  But he lacked courage46 and wanted to ask the Wizard of Oz to give him some.  You could say that the cowardly lion was “chicken-hearted.” 47 That is another way of describing48 someone who is not very brave49.

A chicken is not noted for its bravery50Thus51, someone who is chicken-hearted does not have much courage.

When you are frightened52 or concerned53, your “heart is in your mouth.”  You might say, for example, that your heart was in your mouth when you asked a bank to lend54 you some money to pay for a new house.

If that bank says no to you, do not “lose55 heart.”  Be strong56-hearted.  Sit down57 with the banker and have a “heart-to-heart” talk: be open and honest about your situation. The bank may have a “change58 of heart” -- it may agree59 to lend you the money. Then you could stop worrying60 and “put61 your heart at rest62.”
